Hi! I found your journal through movie_greats, and I really like this entry :) As much as I love the old, romantic idea of journey and travel on a steam-puffing train, films that are shot inside of trains leave me slightly claustrophobic. I guess that contributes really well to films such as Shanghai Express or Murder on the Orient Express where the director wants you to be on the edge of your seat, constricted by the mise-en-scène and the fact that no one knows who the murderer is. Anyway, just my two cents.

One of the great thrills of my life came in September 1996, when I fulfilled one of my lifelong ambitions and traveled across the U.S. by train. I took the Lake Shore Limited from New York to Chicago, then the now-defunct Desert Wind to southern California (betweem Chicago and Salt Lake City, the same route as the current California Zephyr that goes to the Bay Area). It was wonderful. Every American should travel cross-country at ground level at least once during their lifetime, if only to get a grasp of the nation's geography and how America grew.

P.S. That pic at the top is of Amtrak's Capitol Limited , which runs between Washington and Chicago. The station is Point of Rocks, Md., which isn't used by Amtrak but by MARC commuter trains traveling between D.C. and Martinsburg, W.Va.

I had just traveled along that route, earlier this month.
