I've read your observations, and each of them shines lights on aspects of the films to make me think of them in ways I didn't think I could. This one is no different. *goes off to watch ROTS*
I do think Palps was talking about Plagueis here. In the opera scene, Palpatine remarks that Plagueis "could save others from dying, but not himself." So Plagueis did have the power to "cheat death", but apparently not to forsee his own.
To me the significance of the quote is that Palpatine is basically 'fessing up that he does not have the power to save people from dying, but somehow Anakin doesn't quite hear that.
The one thing I never understood while watching ROTS, was why did the council did not have Obi-Wan and Anakin go together after General Grievous, when they were such a good team and had just recently successfully rescued the Chancellor.

Peter Jackson had ripped off Lucas and Spielberg in the third LOTR movies. So what? This is common in the film industry.
