I just saw this one last night and it was, not surprisingly, very different from the first two films, but here's the thing that really confused me about the storyline: what caused the O'Connells to drift appart? They seemed like such a close-knit, loving family who did everything together. In fact, Evy's line "you've never taken any interest in his life." had me thinking, "Since when? Rick was completely devoted to his wife and son." Now I'm not saying that things can't change drastically over ten years, but I just had a hard time buying it.

I was reading that in the original script, Evy had been killed durring an air raid, since Rachel Weiz wasn't going to return. While I adore Evy and didn't want her to die, I think this would have made more sense, that Evy's death was the event that ruined the relationship between father and son. What do you think?

As Alex got older, he probably went away to school, while his parents continued their search for artifacts around the world. I think that by the time Alex had become an adult, he had been apart from his parents for too long.

Also when children grow older, their relationships with their parents sometimes change. I've seen this happen within my own family. This would have especially happened between parent and child of the same gender - namely Rick and Alex. Did you notice that Alex's relationship with Rick seemed a lot more strained than his relationship with Evelyn?

I don't think that Evelyn's death would have been necessary for that to happen. Besides, we would have never been able to enjoy that delicious scene in which Evelyn tried to seduce a sleeping Rick.
