Very thoughtful review. What would you consider a better comic book film, if not this one? Personally this was easily the best film of my summer (or actually winter as I am in the other hemisphere) - what others would you call on par with this, or better this year so far?
Actually, I consider "SPIDER-MAN 2" to be the best comic book movie I have ever seen. And I don't think even that was perfect. Nor do I think that "THE DARK KNIGHT" was the best summer movie. It could have been, but I disliked the last half hour so much that I feel that "IRON-MAN", "SPEED RACER" and "INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL" were better. I feel that the scripts of these three movies were better handled and their flaws less obvious than those of "THE DARK KNIGHT".
Personally, (I'm not just saying this to be annoying or opposite too, just my general thoughts :), but I don't rate the Spiderman franchise all that much. That said, I am not a Spiderman fan which may have something to do with it, and the first films were handled quite well, but I don't think they were great cinema (again, the lack of a strong female character bugged me mostly - but the Batman franchise suffers from this problem also).
I did enjoy Iron Man - it certainly was the surprise of my summer. I haven't seen Speed Racer (again, it didn't rate well here where I am, so I didn't bother), and I did enjoy Indiana, but again to the point where I certainly wouldn't call it great cinema. Mindless summer entertainment, yes. But I like films with a bit more meat to the plot. Comic book films can often be too simplistic, and assume their audience doesn't want anything too challenging (see the Fantastic Four franchise, for example), and often that is to its detriment. Where Iron Man and in my opinion The Dark Knight stand up is where
( ... )
It really does not matter to me if a movie - comic book based or not - is light or dark in tone . . . as long as it is well written. Most of "The Dark Knight" seemed well written to me, with the exception of the following:
*Dr. Crane/Scarecrow's appearance
*the objectification of the Rachel Dawes character
*the movie's last half hour
Quite honestly, I really disliked the movie's last half hour. And because of it, I cannot view "The Dark Knight" as the summer's best movie.
for saying my exact thoughts on this movie. I would also add my personal disappointment with Two Face being a complete one-shot character but you hit it on the nail. Dark Knight isn't a bad movie but I also don't think it's the greatest one this summer.
By the way, have you watched Gotham Knight? What are your opinions on the animated version?
I was upset over Gordon's fake death, because I thought it was unecessary and flagrant emotional manipulation on the screenwriters' part.
Like I had said in the review, aside from the introduction of Rachel Dawes and the lack of Robin, Nolan's Batman movies have pretty much been faithful to Batman canon. I knew that Gordon wasn't dead, because he had yet to become Police Commissioner.
And I really didn't think Spiderman 2 was all that great. And trust me, I'm a big Spidey fan.
I've been a big Spidey fan for the past 30 years. And I adored SPIDEY 2.
wow, though I loved it, i appreite your review, which is superb i must say, i for one dont usually go for comic movies, and dont go for overated things, but genuily because I like and want to see a film. you share a fair, but not insamly negative view.
