Sex and Raunch Culture

I just finished reading Ariel Levy's article on Raunch Culture ("Get a Life, Girls"), and she makes an interesting point about how we separate sexy from sex. (Mostly because sex is a commercial image now.) hm yes i agree :D

after all, commercial sex-wise... society doesn't want to see people looking "bored" or "unattractive" during sex, they want to see people looking gorgeous and hot and "sexy"

and then you have actual sex, and it's completely different :<

I think that (well, at least in the US), between the images of sex we have in media and our abstinence only sex-ed programs, people who don't actively seek out information about sex are really misinformed about what sex is and how sex is. I can't talk about sex from a personal experience, but from tv and porn (and to an extent, literature--OH GOD PEOPLE PLEASE STOP WRITING ANAL SEX WITHOUT LUBE) we get this idea that sex is supposed to be loud and suave and perfect and ridiculously long, and actual sex really, really isn't like that. (Well, okay, some people may have marathon sex, but most media doesn't mention things like, "wow, friction for all that time? Kinda sore now.") It amuses me so much when teenagers on tv have, like, ridiculously hot sex for either their first time or one of their first times. It reminds me of when a girl in one of my poetry classes said, "teenage sex is like a cat trying to swim ( ... )

ugh omg the anal sex without lube thing seriously scares me because omfg i'm pretty sure it does not work like that D:

the media beautifies sex so much tbh, i have to agree :D
