You've never had a wisdom tooth come through before? I've got three (one top, two bottom) and my top one hurt less and has come through quicker (the bottom two came through first but they're still only partially done whereas the top one is quite a way through). Maybe I was just lucky in that the top hardly hurt... although my mum also made some comment about how that's normal.

I think maybe I'm just scared as I had a flatmate when I was at uni who had to have operations to remove her wisdom teeth and my dad got sent home from sea with complications arising from a wisdom tooth!

Hopefully I'll be like you and it'll just come through nicely! I'm going to the dentist on Wednesday so I'll quiz him then :)

I had my three wisdom teeth removed when I was nineteen. The dentist used local anesthesia only (I refuse to let a dentist put me under). It was scarier than it was painful. In fact, the needle used to shoot me up was probably the most painful part. And I was a little stiff from tensing up for most of the surgery.

After a nap and a codeine tablet, I was out helping my dad with yard work the same day. I think I may have taken one more codeine pill the next day and then I switched to Tylenol. The stitches came out the following week. As dental procedures go, this one was far less nasty and inconvenient than my root canal.

As for the expense, my parents insurance covered it. Once again, a far better deal than that pesky root canal.

All my wisdom teeth are impacted or halfway descended (which is why my teeth are so crooked and ugly), and I'm too poor to have them removed. To dig out impacted wisdom teeth is full surgery and would cost thousands of dollars. Yay US healthcare! \o/ But, on the other hand, Matt had all his wisdom teeth pulled out pre-emptively at age 18 and it was not a problem at all. He went in, they gave him a numbing shot, they yanked them out, he took some pain pills, the end. Depending on how much room you have in there, you might not have to get them pulled out at all!

I have wisdom teeth and a relatively good story to tell. I still have all 4 of my wisdom teeth, although they are impacted to various degrees. About 12 years ago, the dentist said I might have to have them all out, but to wait and see. Since then, dental policy has changed so that if wisdom teeth are not causing a lot of problems, they are left in. I have to floss a lot, as the teeth are on edge and food gets caught, and I went through a phase of several years where every few months I would get a bad ache in one or other of the teeth. However, I found that using a good mouthwash like Listerine and making sure it gets right back to the wisdom teeth helps. I was also given a bottle of antibiotics by the dentist and told if pain continued for more than a few days, to take the short course. However, I've never needed to. Clenching your jaw tight and releasing can also help with pain ( ... )
