I'm glad the metaphor came through--I was afraid that I'd repeated the word too many times and that it would lose its potency.

I know! It stayed with me long after the scene ... the program was over. Mary McDonnell acted the hell out of it (and EJO was no slouch either). It was like being shot in the gut to see Laura lose hope like that, and needless to say, was all the inspiration I needed. This story just cried out to be written.
And tonight's episode! GUHHHH!!! That final scene with Bill and Laura in bed was worth all the heartache and frakked-up-ness of the episode. I believe the SQUEEEEEEE!!!!!!! was heard around the world. LOLOL!
