This post is for my friends who don't take part in my faire circuit, especially those out of state. I thought I'd give a brief explanation of the Escondido battle, since it is one that is created and tweeked (each year) by the battle leaders that attend. Thanks for posting this. I find the idea of having a battle with a predetermined outcome a little weird. I have no interest in SCA fighting (I've been to Pennsic 4 times and only watched a battle once), but one of the few things that makes it interesting is not knowing who is going to win.

The alternate ending is a cute twist.

The one thing to remember about faire battles is that it's a show and not an actual battle. 90% of the participants are ot armored so actual contact would be very dangerous. The idea is to put on the best show we can for the audience. Even if we know who's going to win, they don't.

Connor beat me to a response. As he stated, the big difference is that we are playing to an audience that has paid to come in. As to the alternate endings we do that for several reasons. We don't want the battle to become stale. We don't want the audience to always know how it will end either. And frankly, neither side wants to be the one who always loses. We do the same alternative ending thing at Ojai faire.
