So I was just looking at Goodreads and checked out what the most popular currently-reading books are....and I noticed Fifty Shades of Grey up there so I decided to read the reviews as it's been big talk in the office right now (no one has read it yet) and people seem to be of two minds.

And yes, Wicked is fanfiction. However, I read another article on this. Apparently there is a new Regency era series coming out that is called the Brady family with all the characters named after the Brady Bunch people. So, a blog asked the publisher if it wasn't copyright infringement and the publisher saide, no, it was a homage. But the blog argued that the Brady Brunch copyright was still valid so there had to be copyright infringement somewhere. So things like Wicked, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice with Zombies, or Sherlock Holmes can get away with it because those copyrights are already invalid because of their age.
Which is not to say that I think fanfiction isn't good enough to be published if it really isn't just an original story with character names. It's just judging by reviews this isn't.

Those same standards are the same reason I stopped reading Twilight about 20 pages in - that and the book was making me want to stab my eyes out.
