Mmmm. Methinks Jerry was just cranky that uppity civil rights activists dared used religion to push for equality rather than keep power where "it should be". Otherwise, religion and politics is fine.

It's a question I've wrestled with myself, because in the Philippines, which is dominated by the Catholic Church, the clergy had an integral role in toppling the dictatorship, and still has a role in fighting corruption in the government and for civil rights. Surely not a bad thing for religion to engage in. But their power also means that no politician in their right minds will fight for contraception and abortion rights, and they've engaged in censorship. Then I become furious with the Church for overstepping their bonds.
