“Up, up and away,” Chloe murmured to herself, reaching into her bag to find the keys to her apartment.
She had been out of town for a few days getting a story in the vain hope of keeping her job, despite the fact that her new editor didn’t seem to like staring at her ass as much as he did the reporters who were getting published. She’d dropped ten pounds just from being so busy and stressed that she either forgot to eat or just didn’t feel like it.
Maybe she should join a gym. Or invest in a boob job. She might be able to write it off on her taxes as a job expense with the way The Daily Planet was going.
She pushed her key into the lock then frowned as she turned it. The apartment was already unlocked, but Lois had told her she’d be in Granville for the rest of the week covering the Low Shoulder concert.
Her heart fluttered nervously. Someone was in her place. She reached into her purse for her mace and took a few steps into the main room. From there she spotted someone at the counter, sitting on the stool and hunched over moodily.
“Clark, what are you doing?” Chloe tilted her head to the side and rolled her tongue around on the inside of her cheek as she watched Clark there, wearing a tight blue t-shirt and a pair of jeans. His shoes were on the floor.
“Nothing,” he said in a muffle.
Chloe stepped further into the kitchen and saw Clark bent over a huge mixing bowl filled with macaroni and cheese. Huge enough that Clark must have cleared out her supply of Kraft boxes. It wasn’t a big deal. She could get more. But it was a little worrying to see Clark foraging at her place. Wasn’t he able to take care of himself with his mother gone? Couldn’t Lana be asked to make dinner? Lucky that Chloe had gone shopping before she’d left.
She pulled up a stool and sat next to him.
“Sorry for crashing your place.” Clark wiped his mouth on his hand and looked from the bowl.
“No problem. Mi apartment es su apartment.” Chloe touched Clark’s shoulder gently. “Are Kara and Lana crowding you at the farm?”
“No one’s at the farm. I don’t know where Kara is, but as she told me, it’s none of my goddam business.”
Chloe couldn’t control the surge of hope in her chest, even as she tried to martial her feelings to be supportive of her friend in his time of need.
“And Lana?”
Clark shook his head, then leaned on his hand for a moment before forking more macaroni and cheese and stuffing it into his mouth. “You saw. You saw what was at that place, what she was doing.”
“Yeah, I saw it,” Chloe whispered.
“She was planning this. For a long time. It wasn’t the powers. She was going to find some way to kill him. I don’t understand it. Lex hasn’t come after her. I thought I’d have to protect her from him, but he hasn’t come after her. He’s helped her get cleared of charges that she got by framing him for murder and stealing from him.” He pressed the heel of his palm to his temple and shook his head. “He’s not even going to press charges for attacking him.”
“Who can know why a Luthor does anything?”
Clark raised a brow. “I know why he did that. Because he starting going out with her just to piss me off and make me jealous. He invited me to the wedding, y’know. He said he wanted me to see what I’d lost. He let her come back after she screwed him just to leave us to each other’s mercy.”
“I remember you saying once before that he loved her.” Chloe frowned and got up to get Clark something to drink. “You didn’t think he’d hurt her?”
“I think he cared about her. But it definitely started off as a way to make me suffer.”
“Hm.” Chloe looked in her refrigerator, then took the milk and sniffed it. “Uck.”
“Now I’ve lost them both. I’m such an idiot. And I’m so sorry. I can’t lose you too.”
With a sharply raised brow, Chloe turned back to him. “What are you apologizing for now?”
“I’ve not exactly been openminded and sympathetic about what you’re going through with Jimmy.” Clark stared at his macaroni. “In fact, I’ve been pretty smug and insufferable.”
“I won’t argue that.” She grabbed some ginger ale and then a glass to pour it in.
“I thought that now she knows my secret, things would be different,” Clark murmured. He stuffed some more macaroni in his mouth and chewed moodily.
“Well, Lex used to quote this poet Rilke. Um, it goes like... A person isn’t who they were when you last met them, but who they’ve always been.” Chloe pushed the ginger ale over to him. “Lana’s who she’s always been. She’s picked up some tricks here and there, but... I don’t think idealizing her does her any favors. She didn’t even like that back when we were rattling around Smallville High.” God, he was going to have such a tummy ache after eating all that macaroni. Or maybe his super stomach could handle it. She wasn’t sure. She did know that his tight blue shirt wasn’t doing much to cover the way it was bulging out already.
Clark covered his eyes. “I can’t believe I told you everything would be fine if you just told Jimmy.”
“Well. I couldn’t tell him until I was comfortable with myself. I just couldn’t, and he wasn’t willing to wait. So.” Chloe shrugged and picked up a fork to take a little bit of macaroni herself. “Better this way.”
“He needs to stay away from Kara, if he can’t handle not normal.”
“I think Kara can take care of herself,” Chloe replied dryly. “With boys, anyway.”
When Clark was quiet for a long moment, Chloe reached over, took his free hand in hers, and squeezed gently. As she saw a tear fall from his face, Chloe’s lips parted, and she put her other hand over their hands.
“Clark, it’s going to be okay. Maybe not right away. Not right now, but day by day, you’ll get through, and it’ll get easier. As long as you keep going, okay?” Chloe moved around to sit by him again and rubbed his back. Then she dropped over onto his muscular arm and rested her head against his bicep.
Clark said nothing. Not for several minutes. Then he turned and kissed her head gently. “I don’t deserve a friend as good as you.”
“I don’t know why you say things like that. What have you ever done not to deserve me?” She patted his leg gently.
“I’ve been ignoring you.”
“You’ve been honeymooning. It happens. It’s not like you backhanded me or used Jor-El to rape my brain or anything.”
“I’ve not been doing the personal bomb squad thing. At all.”
“Well. I’ve been deflecting. I’ll let you know when I’m feeling like a killing spree.” Chloe slit her eyes and pursed her lips slightly. “Maybe I could clear out the editors at the DP.”
“Don’t joke.” Clark laughed softly. “Is he that bad?”
“He’s a pig. I’ve dealt with sexist idiots before.” Chloe took a deep breath. “It’s like he sits alone and tries to come up with the cheesiest things he could possibly say.”
“That must be annoying.”
“And he called me “Chlo-ster.””
Clark leaned over and shook with laughter. “Oh, poor you.”
Slowly, he turned to her and cupped her face with one hand. Chloe looked up, smiling just a little because it was good to hear Clark give a genuine laugh. Then he pressed his lips to hers, and the moment became surreal.
Clark hadn’t kissed her since freshman year. Oh, he’d kissed back when she’d kissed him, but he never initiated, not when he wasn’t on Red K. She didn’t understand why that was, why he only seemed to want her when she was with someone else or when he was high as the stars in the sky, why he wanted to marry Lana and have sex with Lois (as though those two conditions couldn’t coexist for him somehow), but wanted Chloe for something else.
Their lips parted briefly, and Clark’s large arms pulled her closer. She opened her mouth to speak, to protest just for a moment that he shouldn’t be kissing her and thinking about Lana, but the words didn’t come before their lips met again. A broad palm moved over her ass and squeezed, and he lifted her up as he came to his feet.
Chloe clasped his face in both of her hands and looked into Clark’s eyes. They still seemed distressed. “You need some time...”
“I don’t have... I mean, there isn’t really...”
Before Clark could finish, Chloe realized she was almost on eye level with the top of the cupboards. She looked down with an involuntary gasp. They had to be several feet off the ground now.
“Time...” Clark whispered.
“Well. I tell you to get on this flying thing, and here you are,” Chloe teased.
Clark held her snuggly and dipped his head into her neck.
“It’s okay, Clark. It’s okay.” Her heart fluttered nervously; she was afraid that she would take him into her bed and tomorrow, he wouldn’t want her again. Still, she could never push him away. Some part of her would always love Clark, even if he wanted her to be his back pocket girl. She’d come to terms with that. There was just no one else to whom if felt right to open up that part of herself, and she didn’t need to be in a relationship to feel complete. Her professional goals kept her busy enough, anyway.
If they woke up the next day, and he was gone from her bed, she would pick up the pieces of her heart and treasure the memory of that night whenever she had the strength to bring it back.
Clark floated them over to the sofa, where the two of them sat, caressing and kissing one another, his touches so gentle as to be maddening.
“I won’t break, Clark,” Chloe urged, kissing up his neck.
“I know, I just... with L-”
“Don’t mention Lana,” Chloe ordered. God, this boy had no idea what sexy was.
Clark looked at her like a puppy for a moment, but smiled again as Chloe moved her hands over his chest. She kissed him again eagerly, and as her eyes fell closed, she felt his hands on her hips, moving up under her blouse. She shuddered in anticipation, feeling herself tingle in places that she normally had to go to her dresser drawer to achieve. Her back arched to his touch.
Chloe took the hem of his shirt and pulled it upward. Clark immediately pulled it down and looked at her with big eyes.
“Don’t be shy, Clark. I’ve seen you shirtless before. Lots of times.” Chloe laughed. “You remember that class trip when we bunked together to get away from our assigned roommates and-”
“No, I know. It’s just.” Clark’s cheeks grew pink with embarrassment.
Chloe looked up at him worriedly and let her hands fall to her lap. “Clark, you can tell me. It’s Chloe, remember? The girl who got an eyeful of your secret senior year and has been keeping it ever since? The girl who’s been your dubiously qualified relationship counselor since you booted Lex from the job? She who found you in Metropolis when you ran away and somehow still wanted to be your friend, even after “Kal” scared the highlights out of her hair?”
Clark tried to force a smile. She took his hand tentatively and tried to catch his eye.
“I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the seriously bizarro from you, Clark. I’ve taken it all. I’m not going anywhere.”
Clark looked down again, knitting his brow as his fingers moved over the front of his shirt. When his lips moved, Chloe could barely hear the sound that came out of them.
“What was that?” She touched his arm gently.
“I’m pregnant,” Clark repeated a bit louder.
Chloe blinked for a moment. Clark looked at her, then pulled his shirt off. He moved his arms across his body at first, then pulled them away and looked to the side.
It was fairly obvious without the shirt that Clark wasn’t suffering from freshman fifteen or overindulgence from Kraft mac ‘n cheese. The rest of his body was firm and muscular, but just below his navel was a soft swell outward. Chloe reached forward and touched his abdomen experimentally. The area was hard, and warm, and Chloe felt something deep in her stomach twinge at the realization that Clark was in fact pregnant.
She looked up at him when he touched her hair. His eyes were shining, and she shook her head for a moment, struck silent. It never failed to amaze her when Clark proved to be anything but human, since his heart was nothing but. She wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
“It’s okay,” she said again. “We’ll figure it out.”
Clark nodded.
“Have you told your Mom?”
“No.” Clark groaned, but held on to Chloe.
She rubbed his back, thinking what a mess this was going to end up being. “Okay.” She took his hand and gave Clark a tug.
“Where are we going?”
“You look exhausted. I’m taking you to bed.”
“How forward of you,” Clark muttered. “And nobel. You don’t mind being with a fallen farmboy?”
Chloe looked back at him with her lips twisted in amusement. “Well, it’s not like I can get you pregnant.”
Clark pouted as Chloe took him into the bedroom.
“Shoes off. I’ll... find you something to wear.” Chloe headed to the closet.
“I don’t think I’ll fit into your jammies,” Clark argued. He sat on her bed and pulled off his left boot.
“I wasn’t thinking of Hello Kitty pajamas.” Chloe tilted her head to the side. “Although...”
“Chloe! I may be pregnant, but I’m still a guy!”
“I wonder how that works.” Chloe frowned and took a men’s shirt off the bottom of the closet. She tossed it at Clark.
“Shark’s jersey?”
“Jimmy bought it for me. Apparently it’s romantic to buy something for her the size of a tent. You can keep it.”
Clark rolled his eyes and pulled it over his head. “I’m the one getting fat here, not you.”
“Speaking of that, have you thought about what you’re going to tell Lana?” Chloe asked gently.
Clark paused unbuttoning his jeans and looked at her. He turned away and pulled the jeans off. “I’m not telling Lana.”
“I don’t know where she went, but she’s not unobservant. She’ll figure it out. Either when you’re the size of a barn, or when you’re walking down Main Street with a raven haired baby in a stroller.”
Clark was silent as he folded his jeans and set them on a chair.
“Clark?”
“They’re not hers.”
Chloe cocked her head to the side and raised a brow. “They?”
Clark looked down, and Chloe’s eyes widened as she came up behind Clark to touch his shoulder.
“Who?”
When Clark didn’t speak, Chloe took his hand again and pulled him toward the bed. “Come to bed. We can talk more when you feel like it.”
Clark sighed heavily and got into the bed with her. She was still in her work clothes, and it was obvious, because he kept looking at her blazer.
“I may not have planned this well,” she admitted.
“Thank you.”
“It’s just a bed.” She got up and began to change, her back to Clark, so her clothes wouldn’t be too wrinkled. “So how many are we talking here? A litter? Four? Eight?”
That got Clark laughing again. “Just two.”
“Well, that much is a relief. You’d think Jor-El could have given you a heads up on this one.”
“I doubt it,” Clark replied irritably.
Chloe pulled on a shirt with Warrior Angel flying out of a window wearing the bottom of his suit and the top of Marvel Lady’s suit. Marvel Lady reached out after him, holding up the top he should have been wearing.
Clark laughed again at the shirt. “Okay, that’s cute. Comic book booty call.”
“I’m whimsical.” Chloe got back into the bed and kissed the top of Clark’s head. “Twins. Okay, then. If you’re having twins, I’ll forgive you for eating all of my mac and cheese.”
“A criminal offense.”
Chloe slipped slowly under the covers and smoothed her hand over his arm. “This is how good a friend I am. I sacrifice my carbs for you.”
“Atkin’s friendship.” Clark grinned widely.
Friendship. Chloe bit her lip and sighed. Of course, Clark just needed someone right now. Who better?
“Well, in the morning you can have my waffles. I can call into work. And we’ll talk about... whatever you need to talk about,” Chloe promised.
Clark gazed into her eyes, smiling slightly.
“What?”
He reached over and brushed the hair out of her eyes. Then he leaned over to kiss her again, tenderly and slowly.
“Oh. Okay?”
“Sorry. I’m... all over the place right now.”
Chloe shrugged. “That’s understandable.”
“I’ve never been very good at telling my secrets,” Clark told her. His black hair spilled onto the pillow. “Even the really garden variety ones.”
“Well, you know I’m always here to listen. Especially after this one.”
“No. I mean.” Clark licked his lips. “I’m all over the place, but... Chloe, you mean more to me than you know. When you were with Jimmy, I didn’t want to step on your happiness, and I didn’t know what to do... Then Lana came back, and I thought I could make it all work this time, but we were never able to... you know.”
“Because of your powers. You can’t be with someone when you have them.”
“Obviously that isn’t true. I just kinda... let Lana think that.” Clark crinkled his brow and looked embarrassed. “I mean, obviously, because I did have sex with someone when I had my powers, but I still couldn’t with her. When she absorbed my abilities, I didn’t have any way to say no, and she just... Lana can be aggressive.”
“I suppose. So you’re talking about... you cheated on Lana?”
“No, this happened before Lana came back.”
“Then... I’m lost. What are you trying to say?”
Clark ran two fingers over the bridge of his nose. “I wish Jimmy had never come back into your life, so I could take my place in it. Hell, I wish I’d grabbed you that summer when you said you just wanted to be friends and not let you get away from me again. I just spent so much time not even knowing who I really am, or what I really want. And now I’m knocked up and my fingerprints are all over everyone’s love lives...”
“Do you mean that, Clark?” Chloe moved closer and pressed their bodies together. This was a funny situation. She could feel the small rise of his abdomen, where two tiny babies were nestled. “I can’t promise that things will ever be normal between us.”
“I... can’t either. But I mean it. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Clark shook his head, then cupped the back of her neck. “I keep trying to put distance between us. Because I know with you... With Lana, I’d have to be normal. I’d have to fit into the mold she needed me to be. With Lex, he’d accept it, I think, but he’s so broken. I can’t help him like he needs to be, and he’s so angry with me now. But with you... I think I’ve always known. You’re right. Nothing will be normal. And I think it’ll be less and less normal over time.”
Chloe moved a hand down between them and touched his abdomen.
“That’s just fine by me.”
A tear trickled down her cheek, and before she realized it, Clark was kissing her tears and cuddling her close.
This time the kisses didn’t stop. Not when Clark started to cry a little bit too, or when the tears stopped, or when they both pulled off their nightshirts and briefs and their kisses moved from their mouths to cover every part of their bodies. Chloe climbed on top of him and put her hands on his shoulders.
They paused just a moment to look into one another’s eyes before she slipped him inside her and began to ride. Clark groaned into her kisses and moved with her as she took her pleasure. Then he reached between them and rubbed her clit gently, waiting for her bidding to rub harder.
His other hand rested on her back as he reached up to suck gently on her breast. They had been taunting him, bouncing while she rode his cock, and Chloe let out a surprised moan as her muscles quivered. She felt the pleasure building inside her. She’d never felt like this without the buzz of a power tool between her legs, and Clark... Clark was so warm and soft, so connected with her. It was like he was humming inside of her, and she felt it through her whole body. Her eyes rolled back and her moan deepened into a sound she wouldn’t have recognized from herself.
A moment later, she whimpered softly as Clark’s hips jerked hard inside her, and she clenched herself around him. When he was done, he collected her in his arms and let her lay on his body.
“Oh, Clark. Don’t regret this. Please, please don’t regret this,” she whispered, resting her head on his shoulder.
“I’ve made you skittish,” Clark murmured back. He kissed her forehead. “It’s weird. It’s not normal. But I want it all with you. If that’s okay.”
“I’m perfectly okay with that. I can handle it all.” Chloe draped her leg over Clark’s and nuzzled his neck. “Give me it all. You know I’ve always been a gleeful collector of the weird. And if I can get this part too, I’m not sure I could stand being so happy.”
Clark chuckled softly. “You want it all? Plus twins?”
“Even twins.”
“Even... Lex’s twins?”
Chloe jerked her head up and looked at him sharply. “You! ...Are gonna give me details on that, mister.”
Clark first seemed embarrassed, then under the flush, he grinned widely, that mischievous grin that Chloe knew too well. She rolled her eyes and kissed the corner of his naughty grin and settled back onto him.
“Okay, I’ll take it,” Chloe agreed. “We’ll work it out. We always do. With string and chewing gum, we’ll save the world and have some babies.”
