I'll agree on 20,000 Leagues under the sea and Island of the Blue Dolphins being classic, but I've never heard of Secret of the Unicorn Queen . It sounds (on name along) really interesting!
Heart of Darkness is a good book (and it's almost novella length (okay a bit longer) so it flies by.
Secret of the Unicorn Queen was one of my favorite books as a child. I use to read it so much that it got dog eared, mud-stained, and yellowed within the years that I owned it.
Hee! It does sound kind of cheesy, but it also sounds exactly like some of the books I loved as a kid and still love to read today (when I'm feeling nostalgic).

It's ever so cheesy re-reading it as an adult, but I still adore it.

His Dark Materials is well worth a go - at least you get to see how "The Golden Compass" movie was supposed to end (just as it did in the trailers!).
Cloud Atlas may just work for you as well - guess you could do worse.
