so here i am. i'm doing it again. consider this the product of boredom. not that i don't have fic to work on because i do. but since i'm not at MY computer at the moment... no fic to work on. plus i've got to get my brain going on Mystery again. which requires some re-reading of certain parts of the epic mother fucking bunny i'm working on presently. and i mean EPIC! it was supposed to be a quick one shot. its now well over 22,000 words and there's still much more to write.
anyhow... i nicked this one from
brandi1498 because... what the hell? it looks like fun! and seriously. when have you ever seen me turn down the chance to do a meme? hmmm?
to find out what all the hubbub is, bub, look under the cut. *grins* come on. you know you want to...
1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
i've been writing for over 25 years. much of it was written for myself and it will never see the light of day. i didn't start actively writing fanfic for public consumption until 2003. it was in Harry Potter and i fell into it because of the spawn child. we'd gone to see Monsters, Inc. at the theater and the trailer for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone played. spawn said he wanted to see it. so we went the next weekend and saw the film. LOVED! IT! so much that i had to rush out and pick up all four of the books that were out. in hardcover. in that nifty little cardboard box as a set. (spawn got his own copy in softback). we went home and started reading immediately.
now, a friend of mine had been trying and trying to get me to read the books for a while. problem was, there was so much hype surrounding them that i was terribly adamant against it. i'm so glad that the movie changed my mind. i swallowed the books and probably remarked during a conversation that i couldn't wait for the next book to come out. so said friend started sending me links to fan fiction. and i read it. and i kept thinking to myself, after each story, that i could do it and i could probably do it better. modesty? what's that?
i kept telling my friend, after reading each story and her asking me my opinion of said story, that it was good, but i could do better. so one day she finally up and said "So do it." i took the challenge for what it was and immediately hatched the idea for If the Crime Fits the Punishment. it took me three months to write that story and, looking back on it, i can see it was not, nor will it ever be, my best work. but i had such a fun time writing it that such things don't matter.
so a good friend is responsible for my headlong plummet into the madness of fan fiction. Harry Potter was the first fandom i wrote for because it was what was huge in my mind at the time. i think the reason why HP pulled me in the way it did was because everything was so vibrant and magical. i remember sitting in the theater, watching the movie, and just being completely lost and in awe. the combination of the characters and the settings are what really held my interest. Snape is a mean, snarky, rotten bastard and i love him all the more for it. i don't really know what holds me there. i can't pick just one thing. there's so much that makes it feel like home to me. i don't know if i'll ever give it up.
