SUTN (Seriously Unusual Television Network) was a local sketch comedy TV show I wrote for from 2002-2004. Some sketches are up on YouTube, although nothing I wrote has been posted yet.
The Hollywood writers are on strike because the amount of residuals they get off video and DVD sales is not only laughable, it should be downright embarrassing to the studios. But it's just plain typical of of how screenwriters are treated: no damn respect whatsoever. I hope they stay on the strike line until the studios cave.
While that's true, I thought they were on strike because they current get nothing at all from online distribution? And given that TV in general is headed straight for the Internet, that's a far bigger issue for the future then video/DVD sales (which will plummet in the future as physical media is abandoned in favor of online distribution).
Those are both issues - and yes, online distribution is a big sticking point! The producers are claiming online downloads of episodes are "promotional" and therefore the writers shouldn't earn any residuals from them. If that's the case, then why do they go after people who download those episodes from file-sharing sites? After all, if it's promotional, then wouldn't they WANT people to download them as much as possible?
