Chapter 4

The four stood at the side of the road, Hendrix and Sherry a few meters in front of Bridget who was holding a gun trained at Nikki's head. Nikki licked her chapping lips, still able to taste the blood from her split lip. She kept an eye on Bridget, the woman more concerned with the couple up ahead. She saw Bridget wince, the woman's hand shaking as Sherry and Hendrix kissed, Nikki stepping to the side out of the direct line of the gun. She didn't trust Bridget; the woman was too jumpy and distraught.

"Was Lucas your boyfriend?" Nikki asked, hoping she was delicate enough.

Bridget spun round, the gun immediately raised and aimed at Nikki's forehead. "We were, going to be."

A dark eyebrow arched up as Nikki thought about that.

Bridget took Nikki's silence to mean more was needed to be said. "He was Hendrix's cousin, he set me up, was going to be just the four of us. Had things all set until that damn bust; I told them I didn't trust that runner, but nooooooo," she drew out the word, the gun shaking again, "no one listens to the ditz. And when he turned out to be a Fed..."

"Enough," Hendrix's voice cut across Bridget, the man shoving her to the side and taking the gun. He started pacing. "We need some stuff before we head to the house."

"Stuff? And how do you figure you get 'stuff' without any money," Sherry asked as she began to get irritated with him.

Grabbing Nikki roughly, he pulled her towards him. "Oh we'll get some money." Turning Nikki around, he aimed her up the road. "Just up ahead there's a grocery store. Grocery stores make money. Money for little Miss Princess and I to take."

Nikki looked at him, surprised by her sudden appointment to partner-in-crime.

Bridget frowned, annoyed that she was cut out of the plans. "Hey! I want..."

"Shut up! You two watch for the cops. They are bound to be thick having found the wreck by now. I don't trust to leave her with you," he gave Nikki a push, smirking as he heard her wince when she stumbled forward, "to not try something. So find us wheels and we'll get stuff." He paused and then waved at Bridget. "Gimme your gun."

"Heni, I want my gun..."

"Stop your whining and give it," Sherry shoved Bridget, yanking the gun from the woman's hands and giving it to her boyfriend. "Now go get us a getaway car. There's gutta be something nearby that you can jack."

The two women trotted off in search of a car while Hendrix shoved Nikki in the direction of the store.

"I gotta hand it to you, Hendrix."

"Why's that?"

"You're stupider than I thought."

"Oh really," he snapped as his anger grew inside him. He dug one of the guns into her back, hitting her rib and making her gasp. "I could easily put a bullet in your back right now and then leave you here."

"Thought you said you needed me? I'm crushed. Are we over?"

He shoved the gun into her a little harder. "I'm keeping you around so I've got something to take my frustrations out on."

"They're already out looking for you, why rob the store and give away where you are?"

"I've got nothing to lose, Princess. I was sentenced to life without parole so I'm going to get myself a few bucks, settle some debts and disappear into the Bayou. If they catch me they catch me, but I'm not planning on getting caught." Hendrix stopped them, pulling her towards the side of the store, just outside the door. "We go in, I hold him up and you grab the cash out of the register."

"I don't get a gun? What if the clerk tries..."

"Now who's the idiot? You'd drop me in a heartbeat."

Nikki tried to think of something to say that would scare him but came up empty. What do you say to a man sentenced to life without parole? She felt herself tearing up as she thought that Nora's death meant nothing in terms of punishment.

"Let's go. Now move!" He shoved her towards the door of the small store.

---------------

Nora woke to find herself neatly bandaged and in a sling. "Great," she mumbled to herself, wincing at how tight the bandage was against her chest.

"Don't move it too much," the older woman said as she entered the room. "You don't want to tear those stitches."

Nora sat up, quickly finding herself dizzy.

"Easy. You lost a good amount of blood, you need to go slow."

"Not sure that's gonna happen if your boys keep dragging me around with them."

The woman looked down for a moment. "Did Manuel do this to you?" Her question was quiet; her voice cracking in fear of the answer.

"No. I woke up and found my partner gone and he and his friends just appeared, said they'd heard Hendrix got out."

"Hendrix? I thought he was in prison?"

"We were transferring him. On the way, we were ambushed and he took off."

The woman shook her head, "Stay far away from him, he's an evil man."

"He's got my partner so I'm afraid I can't do that."

El Gato burst through the door, grabbing Nora by her good arm and yanking her to her feet. "We've got to go!"

The woman grabbed him, trying to keep him from taking her. "No! She must rest."

He pushed the woman aside, making her fall to the floor. He never looked back, just continued to drag Nora with him.

"Where are we going?"

"Shut it." He brought her outside and shoved her toward the van. Manuel was waiting by the door.

"Where the hell are we going?" Nora asked again with force.

"Call just came over the police scanner. Hendrix robbed a store not far from here. Bastard isn't going to know what hit him when we get through with him."

"What's the fascination with him anyway?"

Manuel pushed Nora into the van, "he killed my sisters," he said flatly as he slammed the door shut.
