Chapter 14 - It's not the fall that hurts, it's when you hit the ground

Nora groaned, trying to move so she could get away from whatever was squishing her head. "I am going to make sure whoever is pounding on those drums that they lose a couple of fingers."

She began to roll over but stopped, unable to move any further as her arms were restricted, the tension on her upper body causing her headache to flare, the pain overwhelming. She jerked, crying out as her nerves all fired, the pain immense.

"Shhh, honey, you need to just lie still and relax."

Nora had already been trying to twist the other way when she heard the voice. It was low, smoky, soothing; she knew she recognized it, however the pounding din and shooting pain was making it hard to think.

"I, who are you?"

"Shit, how hard did they hit you? I thought amnesia was just a myth."

Nora tried to make sense of everything, the lawyer curling up some, thinking that was usually a good position to adopt, the fetal, 'I am a baby and want my mommy' position. Unfortunately, she found she could not pull her arms in front. "My arms..." She mumbled, almost able to open her eyes, her lids feeling so heavy and starched.

"That would be the handcuffs Darlin'. Nora, do you know where we are or how we got here?"

"You are asking an amnesia patient where you are? Now I am getting scared." Nora groaned and managed to finally roll her side, her cheek falling against cool tile and something silky on the tile. It took her a few moments before she realized it was hair against her cheek. She also was aware of a minty smell, an occasional warm puff of air hitting her face.

"Thank god, your humor is coming back. I was worried. You've been out for a long time."

Nora flinched a little as the warm air puffs were timed with the words and she finally figured out the two were related, the speaker must be near her. "So, handcuffs, I feel like shit warmed over and my head is wanting to fall off. Please tell me I did not get picked up last night and this is what my momma always warned me about regarding wild one night stands."

"Have many of those do you? I knew there was something about you I liked. The wild Nora Delaney hides under the librarian studious lawyer."

Nora smiled, wincing at the way the facial expression pulled on her sore head. She began working to peer out of her eyelids, barely cracking them. She saw her cheek was on tile, strands of dark hair criss-crossing the floor. She opened her eyes a bit more to take in the blurry, dim world. Working to interpret what she saw, Nora realized she was staring directly into a crystal clear set of concerned brown eyes. "You have beautiful eyes," she blurted out.

Berating herself for saying that as she heard a sharp intake of breath, she felt a rush of that minty warm air as a husky chuckle echoed a moment later. It clicked who belonged to the voice, "Fancy meeting you here Detective Beaumont."

"I could counter with a we need to find better places to go on our dates."

"Dates? You mean you are willing to give a regular blue-collar type of joe another chance? Going to date outside your social circle and status? Doesn't money date money?"

"Not all the time. Nora, I am dropping all tease and pretense when I say I have never had more fun or felt more myself than I have these last few days. Not only do I want to give us another chance, I am praying you have that same desire."

Nora was quiet, her body tensing, pleasantly, from how Nikki had said us, the pronoun one she found she wanted to hear used again.

"What happened Nora?"

Nora sighed, licking her lips, finding they had chapped some. She rolled her lower lip, trying to moisten it a bit when she heard a scrapping and rustling noise. She barely opened her eyes when she felt a pressure against her lips. Her eyes snapped wide, her body first tensing, her head zapped with a shooting pain. The pain was immediately diminished as Nikki kept the kiss gentle, the detective's tongue running a bit along Nora's lips, the sensation acting like a cool salve, easing, to Nora's surprise, her pain and headache.

She continued to stare as Nikki pulled back. "I was just trying to sooth your sore lips."

Nora swallowed hard then angled her hips a little toward the brunette, smirking a bit. "You know, I think I have another boo-boo right here." She wriggled a little more, glad to see Nikki smile, god she loved how the woman's lips curved and turned up.

"It's still a little, fuzzy." She rested her head back on the floor, the ache and weariness beginning to creep up on her once again. "I, it's my boss Nikki..."

"Yeah, I know."

Nora tipped her head enough to see Nikki, an eyebrow partially arched, as the blonde tried to follow.

"I got back with the techs, they found a way to recover some of the track. Apparently, while we were trying to get to the reporter, the little group was talking about how to get rid of a nosy lawyer. They mentioned getting her boss to lure her in and then Garrison would take care of the rest. They didn't use names, but I made a guess."

"Damn..."

"I tried calling you, but didn't get you. So I was heading to your place, when I got a text from you to meet. You said your client was getting edgy and you needed help."

"I never sent..."

"Yeah. I found out the hard way. I was ambushed as soon as I walked in. Seems I saw this blonde sprawled out on the floor and I forgot the first rule of good policing as I rushed to check her..."

"Clear the area first." They both said that together.

Nora gave Nikki a rueful grin. "I helped my brothers through the Academy..."

"Well, it didn't take much, and..."

"A black eye, bruised cheek, split lip, rope burns around your ankles and wrists and who knows what I can't see… not much?" Nora rattled the injuries off as she had been taking inventory, searching out every small blemish.

"I don't know if I should be flattered you are paying that close attention or wishing I had my cover up."

"Flattered, no matter what they did, it doesn't mar your natural beauty."

"You are a master flatterer. Keep talking like that and I'll follow you anywhere."

"I'd settle for shooting lessons," Nora said, berating herself for not getting off a better shot.

"You realize we are going to have a hard time living down these date choices. One might get the wrong impression."

"I only have the best impression of you Detective Beaumont."

Nikki beamed, nodding shyly, "And the same for you PD Delaney."

"So, as soon as we get out of this mess, dinner and the shooting range, such a romantic evening."

"I can just see us in cocktail dresses and heels guns drawn and blazing..." Nikki could not help but laugh.

"I like that image, well, you in the dress and heels, I'll take a t-shirt and jeans." Nora stopped, closing her eyes and wincing, biting her bottom lip as she sniffed in.

"Nora?" Nikki's amusement faded as she scooted closer to the blonde.

"I... the room's spinning a little and my stomach is feeling a bit topsy turvy..." Nora said faintly, swallowing hard to try and keep her stomach from turning over.

"Damn, the drugs are bad enough, but I think you might have a concussion too. I'm not the only one that needs some cover up."

"I'm good; we need to get out of here. Let me rest a moment and then I can work on getting up..." She stopped, opening her eyes as she felt a pressure against her side. "What are you doing?"

"Honey, neither one of us are going anywhere right now. You need to rest, so just put your head right here," Nikki had contorted her body, able to offer her shoulder and chest. "Come on, this is no time to be shy, if we are getting out of this, we have to be as rested as possible."

Taking a couple of measured breaths, Nora nodded, scooting and working to take the offer. Settling in, she found it actually did help her headache. "Wow, thanks, that's..."

"Shush, don't make me pull out the lullabies."

"I am officially shushing. Thanks Nikki."

"Anytime Nora, for you anytime..."
