Sometimes I feel very isolated in the world of LJ... Like I can't say anything on certain posts because it's just assumed that the educated, general consensus on something is X when I actually think Y

Come sit at my table. We are smarter than they are. They can only see X and are too closed minded to even consider Y or any other ideas. I know how you feel as I am always the odd man out. Gave up serving on committees at church for that reason. They only wanted people who would agree with them, not point out possible complications or other views.
I am sorry for your loss. Hug.

I know how you feel -- I experience that a great deal in the world of fandom. Like "everyone" knows that fandom is all about the 'ships, but deep down inside I still prefer the deep friendships; 'everyone' knows that shows must keep characters apart or risk ruining the tension, but I'd rather see a steady solid couple facing the external Leviathan together. 'Everyone' knows Will was a jerk in last week's ep of Sanctuary, but he's still my viewpoint character, and I'm no less in love with him than I was before.
I think there's a fine line between simply being who you are (and perhaps putting forward a viewpoint people hadn't thought of, but will go with you), and bringing up things that cause misunderstandings and conflicts that aren't worth the price. I know it's a line I haven't found yet.
But don't give up. Because it is worth it. And losing yourself should never be the price for fitting in. You are exactly who you are for a reason, and I happen to like that person.
