Now that I have slept and absorbed and re-read just dropping back in to comment further...
2 makes sense :) and as I always suspected the best and worst thing about being American is being American ;P.
I had a sneaking suspicion the weight of the myth of American would be... weighty.
I think the "optimism and hope" of being American is something those of us outside your country don't get to see a lot - it's all... power and the negatives because really hope and optimism don't make good stories according to a lot of news directors.
