This is lovely and gorgeous, and I love Jack's point that it's mercy the Doctor needs reminding of.

He'd been from one end of the universe to the other -- seen dames and broads and trees that walked and talked...

This phrasing, for better or for worse, feels dreadfully like it has a filk hidden in it. It's to the tune of "Why I See an Elephant Fly," and it's coming to get me. With big pointy teeth. I'm hoping I can dodge.
