The Cove

I just finished watching this year's Oscar winning documentary, The Cove. I'd seen the trailer before, but didn't pay it much attention.

Please, please, please watch this if you can*. I'm so far past horrified right now, I can't quite find the right words. I know that they are animals, and in the very large scheme of things, we as humans need to ( Read more... )

I've heard about it and I don't know the eating of dolphins and whales bothers me. Probably because they are so intelligent compared to cows and chickens and pigs, though I do know that you can train pigs, but I love bacon!!!

And how sad is this that your post reminded me I forgot to look for lamb at the Commissary this morning. I really need to make a list, but we generally buy the same things. I wonder if they have lamb up at the German market?

I generally try not to think too hard about where meat comes from. So if this bothered you, you probably don't want to watch Food, Inc. I'd love to be able to shop at the Farmer's markets again, but it works a little differently around here for local markets. There's one downtown that has fruit and veg, but that's downtown and I don't know when it starts. Not sure if the nearest small town has one or not.

To be honest with you, if there was a valid reason for killing the dolphins (like for food), I'd probably be okay with it. But dolphin meat has toxic levels of mercury in it --- over 10 times the safe level for weekly human consumption. And the Japan government was feeding the meet to the schools where children have to finish their meal.

I've heard about Food, Inc and no, I don't think I do want to watch it, but I kind of feel like I should, since I willingly eat the meat. I'll have to look into if organic meat is slaughtered any more humanely though.

I struggle with this a lot, and like you, I find myself wanting to go back to a vegetarian diet because of this. I struggle with that one, too. I wish I didn't love to taste of meat so much!

Although I have lots of vegetarian cookbooks, enough so that I can eat vegetarian for long stretches at a time and not feel deprived. After getting back from my vacay, I do feel as though I need some sort of a "cleansing" of my palatte, and I think I may do vegetarian for a while and see how long I can make it last (hopefully long enough that meat just doesn't sound appealing to me anymore).
