Fan Rant '10 #1: Ship - Dormé/Anakin

Apr 02, 2010 17:28

[requested by rabidfangurl]I'm pretty much live-and-let-live when it comes to shipping, even the few I flat-out can't stand. If it makes you happy and you're not shoving it down mine or someone else's throat, go hog-wild. That said, live-and-let live doesn't mean that I don't have an opinion on a said pairing ( Read more... )

Hi! I agree completely with this rant, although I have nothing constructive to add.

Also, OT, but as a fellow H/Hr, Joss, and Star Wars fan, I think you are awesome. :)

Thanks! :D Pretty sure I've seen you around H/Hr fandom, though I guess we never crossed paths.

:) I think I've seen you around too. There are so many of us, though sadly not as many as their used to be.

Hey, I agree with this rant. I like Padmé (even though I don't ship her with Anakin; that pairing engenders in me a similar reaction to how you feel about Obidala). If I'm friends with some A/D shippers, it's certainly isn't because of what they ship. It's because I can ignore it. I tried reading some fic with this pairing and my impression was that it stems from a misunderstanding of Padmé's character in canon. For some reason, a lot of people find it hard to understand the basis of her personality: compassion + defiance/stubbornness (which are the main personality traits of fanon Dormé). In most Padmé fics, people take one of these qualities and exaggerate it while ignoring the other.

Oh, thank you. I thought I was alone in my utter distaste for this ship.

What I dislike the most is the reason the writers dislike Padme: she dares to have her own guiding principles, her own ambitions, and her own gasp life! She doesn't seem to realize that women are supposed to live their man's life, not have a career and a single thought in her head that your man didn't put there. How dare Padme not live for Anakin, but actually think she has responsibilities to her planet and her people and, even worse, herself! A/D shippers seem to be living in 1952.

Plus, in the few of these stories I have looked at, Dorme always kills Luke. So that Dorme can save Anakin rather than Luke. And being a Luke fangirl since 1977 (yes, I'm old) that's something I can't forgive.

Yeah. Padmé doesn't instantly throw herself at the hot, willing, devoted guy, so she must be made of pure ice. The whole forgiving him for the Tuskens and marrying him and dying for him apparently was just an act. ;)

Dormé offing Luke? Not on. NOT ON. I have to wonder if Padmé dislike doesn't somehow figure somewhere into that too, in eliminating Padmé's avatar and the flesh and blood result of hers and Anakin's love.

I personally don't think I'll ever understand people who go crazy over pairings for which there's no given interaction, or as in this case even a fully fleshed out personality for one of the characters.
