From what I understand, actually the first episode to air - still good, damn entertaining TV. But "Serenity" - the ep, not the film - definitely does a better job of setting up the plotlines and characters (further proof to me that Fox's judgment regarding this show is "...bwah?"); if TTJ had been the first episode I saw, I don't know if I'd be as

Train Job has some classic moments (Mal kicking Crow into Serenity's engine never gets old. "Darn."), but on the whole it's one of the weaker eps. I can't believe FOX made Joss and co. rush to write it as a pilot. And after the 2-part "Serenity" had already been filmed! *facepalm*
Part of me wants to pace myself, knowing there's only 14 episodes, but another part of me's going OMGwantmoreNOWdammit!
Oh man, I failed miserably on that count - I Netflixxed the series early in the summer, and would watch every episode on the disc I got in a day (3-4 to a disc). Heh.
You can definitely find the boxset for cheaper - I believe it's going for $34 at Amazon.
Anyway, glad you're enjoying the series so far! It only gets better. :)

I'm starting to rank Fox's stupidity right up there with SciFi's in regards to Farscape - and believe me, that's a very high tower to topple. Genuinely promising shows are axed, and we get stuck with dren like Charmed and Tremors: The Series.
I honestly believe that Serenity is hands down on of the best television pilots I've ever seen. I mean, pilots generally suck, lots of exposition and clunkiness. Everyone's still feeling around, but Serenity works off the bat in a way that's amazing.
I agree. (Only time will tell if Firefly will come to rival the love I have for Farscape - but even FS didn't do as well with its pilot.) That's part of what hooked me - that a pilot, an episode you generally expect to be inferior to what comes later, could so seamlessly set up its show's premise and its characters, and just as smoothly execute it. There's plenty of exposition/character&relationship development, but you're not beaten over the head with it; it works pretty ( ... )
