My Musical Skills (Or Lack Thereof) and Items of Historical Significance

Jan 19, 2011 19:33

Today was my first violin lesson in a few weeks.  My poor kind teacher must tear her hair out once I leave - I'm one of those people who's lack of skill is painfully obvious.  The only positive thing I can say about my relationship with music is that once I do manage to get the hang of a piece, lack of practice can't do much to drive it from my ( Read more... )

Wow, those pictures are really interesting. Usually these old pictures are (don't get me wrong) lifeless, because people had to sit still for very long, but it's great to see that even then people were already goofing around in pictures!

I know what you mean about the lifelessness. That's one of the reasons I thought this was really interesting - these people seem so much more understandable/relateable when they're showing some personality.

Ooooh! Civil War? That's one of my VERY favorite time periods in history (along with WW2, Regency, and many others)!

That's really cool that you play violin! I've always wanted to play a stringed instrument, but I wanted to learn cello and I don't think we have a cello teacher around here not to mention a cello would be pretty expensive. I almost got the chance to take cello when I was going to college in Pensacola, FL, but they wouldn't let me change to a music major rather than just a music minor. I ended up leaving anyways. I can play piano, but we don't have one anymore :'(

Well, good luck with your violin lessons. I'm sure you're much better than you think you are. :D If you practice, you're definitely better than me! (I do have some musical ability, my problem is that if I don't feel like practicing or if I despise the song that my teacher assigned me, I just DON'T practice. I'm a terrible music student, can't you tell? Lol.)

Yes, the cello is really neat! If I didn't play violin, I'd like to learn cello. You're right about the expense, though. And teachers are harder to find as well. I'm sorry you couldn't take it in college, what a big disappointment. ) :
Thank you for the encouraging words!

How long have you been playing the violin? And good for you for keeping at it, even if you're not a natural! I played a long time ago, but I wasn't very good at all. Compounded by the fact that I grew frustrated and didn't want to keep up with something I struggled with so much with so little in the way of rewards, I ended up quitting. Sometimes, I wish a little bit that I hadn't given it up.

Thanks for sharing those pictures! Connecting people with history always helps me remember history better and makes it more interesting. And, yes, I agree: their sacrifices deserve to be remembered.

I've been playing the violin for about 5 years, though lately my lessons have become much less frequent. Thank you for the encouragement! And I understand how it could end up being more trouble than it's worth. I have a sister who played for few months and then decided she wasn't going to keep fighting it.

I'm glad you like the pictures! I may link a couple more with my next post. And I definitely agree that seeing the people who lived "Back then" really lets information and facts sink in.
