Encyclopaedic

That western music I'm listening to is heralding the sunset exit of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which will no longer be produced in corporeal form. It's the end of an era, my friends (and the start of another - arguably of lesser intelligence). Of course, the executive types say this step has nothing to do with Wikipedia and Google, but who are ( Read more... )

Aww, that's too bad. But they are INSANELY expensive. :P I've never really read the Encyclopaedia Britannica, but we have another encyclopaedia set (they're green-and-white with gold lettering on covers) that I think my mom got when she was a girl or something, and I have many fond memories of sitting there and browsing through them with my sisters and friends. Okay, mainly we looked at the "Costume" pages and made fun of the old French costumes with long-haired guys, but still! :P ;)) I still like sitting and looking through them now just for fun sometimes, even though they're probably close to 40 years old and very outdated. It's just not the same with computer versions.

But, hey! Maybe if people aren't reading them anymore, I can buy some cheapish at booksales and perhaps have a complete set in case I ever have kids (or, you know, just so I can have fun). :D

We actually have an old set of Encyclopaedia Britannica which my dad got from his father. I remember I enjoyed the jewelry pages the most as a child. : D Right now I'm the only one in the family interested in the set at all, so maybe someday it will be mine. Yes, ours are a rather out-of-date as well, lacking in information. My dad has moved them to storage in a box in the basement. : ( But last time there was an internet outage and I was desperate for some detail about a historical figure (can't recall whom) I crawled down there and dug them up. It wasn't the most comprehensive of sources but it was the good to have.

Good point. : D

Ooh, nice. Jewelry pages? I'm guessing our set doesn't have much in the way of that since I don't remember seeing them, but it could just be bad memory. :D

Ooh, that'd be nice to have! Unfortunately, I think my sisters might be interested in our set, so we'll see...

Hurrah for old-fashioned research! Especially when technology fails. ;)
