The arrival of yet another new professor

Aug 06, 2006 21:49

It was late afternoon when Soulfire arrived at the school that was called St. Catherine's. Although she could fly - or use any other kind of transport - she came on foot and carried a large, wooden staff with her, which she used to lean on. It had several strange markings on it and a deep red jewel on the top ( Read more... )

St. Catherine's had little need for a gardner, because Katelyn instinctively took care of the various trees and bushes on her own. It was simply in her nature, being so closely tied to the things of nature, to protect and provide for the local plant and animal life. And despite being just another student with no official responsibilities, she could be found doing this almost as often as she could be seen in the classrooms.

Today, she knelt outside the dorm room that she and Liz Riley shared, watering and weeding some very unusual green bushes that she had planted earlier just outside their window. "It is not your time yet," she whispered to the plants in a soothing voice, speaking to them just as she would any other living thing. "But your time will come. And you will grow more beautifully, than anyone else in this land."

((OOC: Yeah, her back's turned, but she's right beside the entrance of the dorms if Soulfire wants to stop her to ask for directions. Or, if anyone else wants to jump in, they're free to do so as well.))

Katelyn chuckled, finding Soulfire's statement about appearances to be quite fitting. "That sounds, very nice," the short girl replied. "Yes, I would like tea."

As she began to walk aside the professor, she turned to glance up at her with a quizzical look. "I don't, understand. You teach Slayers, but you teach the class for Seers? Like, to show others how to See?" After a few more steps, she glanced downward. "I...I do get, confused sometimes."

"That is alright, we all feel confused sometimes." Soulfire took a moment to think of how she could explain this best to Katelyn. "You see, Seers - and Prophets - get visions that tell them the future or what has happened in the past. But before that, there were many, many ways of divination also used by common people to foretell the future. They use cards, stones, wooden sticks or other things to find answers to their problems."

It was the best she could do as explanation and Soulfire realized that the girl probably needed a demonstration to understand what she meant. "I'll show you after I made tea for us," she promised while she opened the door to what would be her room. "I'm afraid I don't have anything special for with the tea, though."

Kate listened intently, though Soulfire's explanation was more than adequate. The naive girl was more upset with herself about how she always seemed confused by everything in general in this strange, new world. "It must be nice, always to know. If you See before and after, then, you probably don't make all the mistakes..."

She quietly began following the professor, her mind occupied with the subject at hand. "So, it is like seeing the red sky, and knowing that tomorrow will rain?" A calm smile showed that she was not worried about the tea, but was happy just to have met a new and interesting person. "Or seeing the birds take to the skies before the cold weather comes?"
