And that's lead to lots of flack from some people in regards to wasting my time and such by working there.

Fuck 'em. You get a job in the museum world by paying your dues at unpaid internships, then jumping to badly-paid jobs, and networking through the people you meet at both. (Alas, I had too many student loans to stick to the badly-paid museum jobs and jumped ship for libraries! I misjudged that. :/)

Oh--and doing archiving and cataloging an undocumented collection? Seriously important work because all future cataloging will be based on the stuff you do to start with, and the collection is pretty much useless without good cataloging, because nobody knows everything that's in it, and it can't be used effectively by researchers or historians. So that's good, useful, essential work right there that will be SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL in the future that you were responsible for. :) When I worked in museums, we loved and treasured all our volunteers. :)
