Perhaps it's also that the interests of the Christian right and the interests of the Capitalist right have begun to diverge.

Take the embryonic stem cell issue for example. What capitalist wouldn't want more science research if it led to expensive drugs and treatments?

Ralph Reed might be another good example. By aligning himself with the power--that is, the money--he tainted his moral high ground as a Christian conservative... and thus, couldn't even survive a Republican primary in Georgia.

I, for one, wouldn't mind one bit seeing the Radical Right fracture.

I think that's an excellent point - for years the capitalist right has been using the Christian right to get votes. But as the Christian right grows more demanding, it becomes less useful to the capitalists (who aren't going to restrict any money-making media, for example, though the news seems fair game).

I think, too, that as the Christian right has gotten more power the actual outlines of their program have become clearer. People who might have voted for a "family values" platform out of a general sense of righteousness - or homophobia - aren't necessarily all that eager to embrace the idea that the impending apocalypse makes global warming irrelevant.
