The trick is to sound like you know an incredible amount about wine to the layperson. Fortunately, this is easy. Wine seems to be a stupidly complicated thing, with the different labels, countries and grapes all contributing something to the confusion. I have discovered a few tricks though, that make it sound as if I've really studied this and ( Read more... )

Hehe, yeah. Most people only know what they learned from the movie Sideways. Personally, I buy wine that's never over $12 and I Seriously DO buy wine because of a label. Even better if it has a kick ass label and has a Wine Spectator rating. I have never gone wrong using that tactic. There's a lot of nice wines under $12. Even some good ones under $10.

My favorite grape is the Sangiovese. It's an itallian grape. It has a little spice to it much like some of the South American wines. Most wine lists won't have a Sangiovese, but when they do I get all excited.

Oh, we buy wine because of the label all the time. Or if its an interesting shaped bottle. Sometimes you score something incredible, other time...bleh. That's how I first got into Carmenere. It was part of a blend they carry at Target that said "Oops!". It had the whole story of it being the lost grape printed on the label.

Actually, it does exist in France, it was never completely extinct, just almost. And only recently has interest grown to the point where it is financially justified to grow more than a few acres. It also exists in northern Italy, where it was imported by mistake from France.

Just illustrating how there is always someone who knows more. And I'm not even that much of a fan of Bourdeaux, I prefer Bourgogne :)

I actually have a bottle of Oops! Carmenere wine downstairs. I haven't tried it yet, but this makes me feel slightly better about my $10.99 impulse purchase! I had never tried Carmenere, so I thought I'd give it a go. Still haven't opened it.

Ooo, wine <3 I'm always looking for new stuff to try, especially now when I live in a country of "yes, of course you buy wine at the supermarket *looks at me like I'm a freak*" Oh England. (And everywhere else, apparently. Norway is such a weird country.)
