Things To Do in Denver When You're Online

Or anywhere.

Recent wank about For Better For Worse has led me to two wonderful things:

How Lynn Johnston uses reference photos and models. This is really awesome, even if you're not 100% happy with the strip as it is.

And a marvelously-written rant about Anthony, and why we hate him. Including the fabulous thought: At the time, I was ( Read more... )

I love that rant so much. Sometimes, when I'm sad, I reread it, and it makes me feel better.

I'm kind of sad I hadn't seen it before now. It's so prescient! ...which is totally depressing really.

I saw that rant a couple months ago, and I still love it. God, I hate Anthony. I hate him so much. Comics Curmudgeon is one of my favorite sites because it's full of people who hate Anthony as much as I do, and that warms the cockles of my black little heart.

I love that she put a series of good reasons to the why I instinctively hate him.

That site's pretty awesome. I learn so much from wank!

This is great and also encouraging. I always tend to think that references are a crutch and that it means I can't draw shit. To see that REAL cartoonists use them relieves me to no end :)

Yes! References are totally your friend. Do you have telophase friended? She talks a lot about the methods she uses.

Hee! I was just coming here to comment that I'm going to have to get a toy car with doors that open for volume 2 of Project Blue Rose because when I took photos of a car for reference in volume 1, they ended up all being from exactly the wrong angles. XD

(Er, if you don't want to read through the massive mounds of piffle on my LJ, I think most of my art/comics posts are tagged - art, art reference, project blue rose, spindrift, manga, doujinshi, and various similar tags.)

Oh wow. That rant makes me very glad I stopped reading For Better For Worse. I used to love it - I clipped the entire story arc when Lawrence came out and kept it for years (long after I'd stopped reading the comic). But as much as I liked the fact that she tackled some interesting issues and did a lovely job exploring aging, I couldn't bear what shaenon so adroitly noted: the unfeminist moralizing. I spend enough time being pissed off by that in real life, I didn't need it on the comics page too. :-)

And while I never would have described it as subtle, it's increasingly heavy-handed, and less funny. Which is a shame, as she is still exploring interesting stuff, if she was more subtle with it.
