Supporting the strikers, 2007

Nov 18, 2007 10:07

Pass the word. At the end of the post there's a YouTube video (originally linked by andmydog that nicely sums up both the stakes and the way the studios have been contradicting themselves.

I think I'm gonna make me a 'supporting the strike' icon this morning.

Also OMG radiofreebanri, OMG.

fandom, writer's strike

HAHAHA THAT'S RIGHT NOT EVERYONE LIVES IN AMERICA.

As simply as possible, the Writer's Guild of America is on strike, wanting 2.5 cents of every dollar of online revenue. They got fucked over by VCRs and don't want it to happen again. Which means my TV season here is...oh, about two to four episodes per show until hiatus.

I've just been reading the FAQ on the fans4writers site and am now terribly confused but left with the distinct impression that a lot of good creative people are being horribly screwed over, in which case I'm glad the overwhelming support of the fans seems to lie with them.

They're asking for very little, really. Yeah.

The strike sucks and I really hope the writers get a fair deal out of this, but I have to admit I've been really enjoying the videos they're making. Which I guess is the point--which side are you going to support, the giant faceless corporations, or the lovable underdogs who are making hilarious YouTube videos and just want to be paid for their work?

Someone had an editorial in the LA Times-- it's linked at the WGA home page-- about how 70% of respondents to an EW.com poll were with the writers. Apparently the producers did a big ad about the "700% INCREASE" the writers were demanding, and the writers was like, "yeah, that's 2.5 cents on the dollar. Fuck you bitches."

That video is completely hysterical, and sums the whole thing up so well. I laughed out loud at the last bit where the 'Viacom President' shows up. Hilarious.

They should know better than to try to best the Daily Show writers, heh.
