The Archive of Our Own is looking for feedback from fanartists on what they want on an archive! If you're a fanartist, please take a look.

In case you haven't heard via glass_icarus or ithiliana, fiction_theory has a great post on what art is, and what it costs, and how Amanda Palmer is not Erykah Badu. Interesting stuff, and a great post. I'm still chewing over everything brought ( Read more... )

Yes! It's a nice archive, I've found it very easy to work with. Hopefully they'll listen and do the same thing for art.

We had it forty years ago and are hellbent on pretending it never happened, because it didn't happen here.

I am fairly cynical at this point. It's not like we didn't have pictures last time.

a great post on what art is, and what it costs,

Why do you do this to me whyohwhy arghhhhhh I think I'll go walk the dog now and by the way did you know you can get tarnish off silver via a kind of reverse electroplating using aluminum foil, soap, baking powder and salt and I have my fingers in my ears la la la I can't hear her . . .

Oh dear, I should have known. I think she's got some good points but I'm not sure about all of it-- I keep thinking of the vast majority of artists, who are neither Badu nor Palmer. But I do think she got a lot of why Palmer's 'edgy' bullshit does not sit with me.

Dude, I don't even have words to express how grateful I am to have an ironclad reason to ignore the Palmer thing. Based on the fragments I've been unable to avoid, I shudder to think. It's like, Bad Judgment Theatre. So, so not arguing with you on this one.

She seems to think 'edgy' and 'asshole' are synonyms. DNW.

I was sad but not surprised about the soldiers-civilians thing. From what I've read, we've been sending troops into that situation with training for traditional warfare only, and of course the whole armed forces bureaucracy can't be bothered to get soldiers the training they need to handle this style of combat.

I don't think it's too much to expect that we'd be training our people for the combat they're doing, not the combat they'd be doing if it were several decades ago. I really wish I felt like I could do anything to change this.

Exactly. And a field of war is free range for a lot of assholes to be assholes.

Honestly, a lot of people were campaigning for non-traditional combat training for a long time-- and most of the experts knew that Iraq would be mostly guerilla combat. It's just depressing.
