Fic: A Study in Purple (Holmes/Watson, R)

So, there's this thing of beauty (ok, slightly cracky beauty, but beauty nevertheless) called the Sherlock Holmes kink meme. Which anyone so inclined should check out, because there are literally thousands of prompts waiting to be filled.

Anyhow: Someone requested fic based on Neil Gaiman's short story A Study in Emerald, of which I'm a longtime ( Read more... )

WOW. Awesome. I can't believe fic exists for "A Study in Emerald," and this was just beyond amazing. Your writing style was absolutely beautiful. *SQUEE*

Ok, I know *nothing* about Sherlock Holmes-- I thought I would have seen the film by now, but noooooo-- nor have I read the Gaiman story, but you know I love you writing, so I was delighted to read this even though I have no context for it.

My particular favorite line, as I am imaging an extremely uptight, priggish Watson, is "Even after all this time, I hesitate to describe what I saw, but in the interests of verisimilitude and integrity, I feel I must proceed." Oh yes, please do describe... In the interest of verisimilitude and integrity only, of course!

I'm sure I'll love this even more once I'm familiar with the source material. :)

I had particular fun writing that line! Adopting this voice was like putting on a heavy steampunk costume and learning how to move in it; at first it was weird and clumsy, and then it was almost alarmingly easy and fun.

The narrative voice and the narrator's identity are actually very important in A Study in Emerald. Without giving everything away, I'm just going to say that there is a twist (or two). The most essential parts of the Holmes canon for appreciating A Study in Emerald are probably the beginning of A Study in Scarlet, which is the first Holmes novel, the short story The Final Problem, and possibly The Adventure of the Empty House. But if you want a shortcut, you could just check the Wikipedia page for A Study in EmeraldOh, and the new Holmes film is an epic slashfest. Anything that features a line about Holmes and Watson 'playing Victoria and Albert' cannot be interpreted otherwise. And that's just the beginning ( ... )

Also, the reply above would be from me. I have no idea why it showed up as anonymous.

Oh my, but this is brilliant; the narrative is perfect -- Moran is as exactly himself as he is in Emerald, still sounding so Victorian and dutifully military -- and our boys --! Oh, ♥ for their goodbye in the face of duty to King and Country.

So good.

Thank you for the lovely feedback! I've never tried writing anything remotely like this before, so I was worried about how the voice and characterisation would work out. Really happy you liked it!
