I am so sorry to read this. I, too, had an abusive mother, but I was able to save possibly too many things (she had an enormous collection of photos, some of which I'd never seen) because I was responsible for cleaning out the house (as an adult of 50, a much different situation than a 24-year-old in college). That was a task no 24-year-old in your situation should have been burdened with; it's a shame that your uncle didn't think things through on your behalf.

Thank you for your understanding. I felt like a very burdened 24 year old, but I have my regrets about not being the "take charge" person of the whole thing. I just couldn't do it then, though!

I'm aways amazed at what family dynamics come out in these situations. Despite not "taking charge" I think you were probably one of the most adult at the time- which is sort of sad but probably gave you the strength you have today.

I always felt like I was the adult in the family from the time I was a young adolescent. That's a hard position to assume in a family at such an early age. I grew up fast, for better or worse.
