I don't have a new fill - just wanted to say this was a great look at Garp, weaving his life into a convincing tapestry from the canon hints. Loyalty truly does seem to be the key word for him. He comes off as very human here. I adore that you include the family that "became his through command" in his motivation by the end.
Another had stepped in to take his place and he lost to that red-haired bastard even as he owed the pirate emperor a debt that was impossible for him to repay.
Hey, Ace didn't need Shanks in order to choose to be a pirate! ...Huh. Just realised I'm not sure if he came up with it all on his own - because piracy is the most obvious route to fame that he's aware of - or if Sabo had the ambition before him and inspired Ace.

XD That sentence actually refers to Luffy, who was introduced into the narrative the paragraph before, but I didn't make that clear, I suppose. I meant for the debt to refer to Shanks saving Luffy from the sea monster and death, something that one could argue was in some way caused by Shanks' presence but Luffy struck me as the kind of kid who'd get into that kind of trouble anyway.

I was speaking too clumsily, sorry! I think I did get what you said, but the line just made me think about how it came to be that Ace didn't need a positive example of a pirate around (as far as we know).

Ah, cool. Now that you mention it, I think I've assumed (at least since the flashback) that Ace determined to be a pirate out a combination of spite towards his father and a need to prove that he was just as good/better and in a twisted way fulfilling the expectations that the world would allegedly hold for Roger's son. And also, maybe, because of Sabo somehow and because pirates are kinda cool.
Re: Prompt: Single MindeddethoratsMay 12 2011, 12:55:42 UTC
XD Nice take on the idea, really liked it! Sanji does really have someone to put at least that part of his cooking skills to the test every day. Now, to come up with something for the new prompts...
Prompt: Cliché (1/2)printfogeyMay 14 2011, 21:39:31 UTC
This took so many false starts you can't believe it. Sorry it's not very funny! Also, one day I'm going to be able to write Franky/Robin from Robin's POV. ONE DAY

Prompt: Cliché (2/2)printfogeyMay 14 2011, 21:40:51 UTC
After minutes of walking - long, quiet, lovely, embarrassingly happy minutes - Robin sighs as she leans into him again. "Excellent idea," she murmurs. "Not only does the umbrella cover most of our faces, but it's also a great cover, to appear as a dorky, lovey-dovey couple

That's a relief. I was worried I'd overdone the clichéness. ^_^ Was surprisingly hard to fill the prompt - I tried more satirical stuff but it didn't really work (and mostly came out like thinly veiled and not-very-funny bashing of certain other shonen comics).
