He doesn't know much about Charlotte Lewis. The few things he does know are mostly trivial--small, insignificant quirks or habits. Like how she always seems to have some sort of witty retort on the tip of her tongue or how she's fiercely protective of her own stuff--however useless and worthless it may be in everyone else's eyes. He knows she doesn't make an effort to be liked and she rarely offers to help someone out unless it benefits her in some way, shape, or form. But, as he mentioned, these are the trivial things he notices...things that anyone sparing a passing glance could figure out, the things that she allows people to see.

There are other things, though, that reveal a part of Charlotte's character that he thinks she doesn't want anyone to see. Like the subtle way her face seems to soften when she speaks to him. Like how she sees the worst in everyone, but can be charmed by a small jungle flower, able to see the simplicity and beauty in such a tiny thing and marvel at its innocence. Or how her eyes light up like an oceanic sunrise when she watches him working (she thinks he doesn't notice but he does), but darken into black water when someone speaks down to him.

Daniel was once told that if one wanted to see the true person behind a man (or, in this case, woman), they had but to watch them when they did not think that anyone was. And Daniel had found this true of Charlotte.

Sometimes, as he was falling asleep by the fire, he would watch Charlotte through the flames. She would stare at the dancing flames with the most hollow, empty expression...as if she wasn't really seeing it, but rather looking into the future or the past. The light cast by the fire often played upon her pretty features, silhouetting her and giving her an ethereal look. Daniel thought she looked like an angel...a sad, broken angel. It was in those moments that Daniel saw the woman beneath the mask, the hurting soul that hid behind a facade of indifference.

And he'd wish that he could do something. But he never did. He did, however, entertain scenarios in his head. He'd wonder what she would do were he to, say, hug her...maybe even kiss her. Would she willingly allow him to break past her outer defenses? Or would she immediately shun him, flee to the safety of what she knew--a place of callous carelessness. A place where neither he nor anyone else could reach her.

Daniel didn't know how she'd react because he did not know her as much as he'd like to, as much as he one day hoped to. Her past was a complete mystery to himself and everyone around her. At times, he'd get a glimpse of it due to something she'd let slip, but other than that, Charlotte might as well have been born on that freighter...for that's where her story began for him.

If he had to guess, though, he would think that something must have happened in her past to make her the way she is today. Something or someone had to have done something to her. Cause and effect, he rationalized. One could not exist without the other. And, since that was the case, what had caused the beautiful angel to shatter as she had...and could a mere mortal like himself put the pieces back together? Was he even worthy of trying?

Regardless of her many flaws, Daniel would not have changed Charlotte for the world. She may have been broken as an angel, but she was whole in his eyes. Perfect.

"Well, don't just stand there, Dan," Charlotte snapped, yanking him out of his reverie. "We've got work to do."

"Right," he replied. "Sorry."

She must've caught his knowing glance. "What?"

He released her gaze, letting his own fall to the ground. "Nothing. I was just thinking."

"Oh?" She looked at him expectantly.

Daniel repressed a smirk as he moved past her. "Like you said, we've got work to do."

No, Daniel Faraday didn't know everything about Charlotte Lewis...but what he did know, he loved.
