two quick things

First, SF Signal's Mind Meld recently posed this question--

"Q: How do you think media tie-in novels affect the genre of sf/f?"

--to a wide bunch of authors, including (but not remotely limited to) Chris Roberson, Walter John Williams, Kevin J Anderson, and David Gerrold. If you scroll down past my answer, you'll find more good points on the topic than I can take in all at once. I expect to see the last one on a t-shirt before long.

ETA: More on tie-ins at Jonathan Strahan's blog, here.

The second thing is that I'm taking an all-weekend workshop called "Dismantling Science Fiction" at the Victorian Writers' Centre across the first weekend in October. Spots are limited, and they're filling fast. If you've ever wanted to pick my brains for two whole days straight, then this is your chance. It will be intensive, and it will be hands-on. As the blurb says: "Expect the unexpected. BYO imagination!"
