I'm a sucker for backstory. I'm glad this worked for you because the risk with big backstory is that it can end up just looking like a big hole.

After I wrote this I rediscovered the scene in canon where Waya meets Shindou (who's been missing his games) in a children's playground and tries to convince him to come back to Go. I'd forgotten it. I still couldn't say whether the playground in my fic is a coincidence or whether a subconcious part of my memory was working on my behalf.
