When Hector had returned home earlier Lacroix had been busy cleaning up the dining room; because no matter how clean the rest of the apartment was kept it was freaking impossible to keep dust off those skeleton chairs ( Read more... )

Even though several doorways separated them, the absolute quiet of the household made it easy for Hector to hear that shriek; even though the sound was faint from his bedroom, he still heard it and immediately rushed outside his room. Despite the fact that he'd planned on sequestering himself for quite a while longer, Lacroix’s safety trumped everything else; his concern for his apprentice made him forget about wanting to hide in his room all day. The anxiety he’d felt for Corbin the last few days was making him more paranoid than usual anyway; the last thing he wanted was for something terrible to happen to Lacroix as well.

When he reached the kitchen seconds later, he quickly assessed Lacroix from where he sat on the ground -- a minor wound but otherwise unharmed, which was certainly a relief to Hector. But Lacroix looked terrified; it didn’t take Hector long to realize just what had terrified him. In the time it had taken him to reach the kitchen, Melvin had managed to nudge that knife far enough away from himself so as to appear ( ... )

Lacroix had thought himself rather capable of adjusting to the bizarre nature of life around that apartment; he had read about things that seemed far beyond possible, but reading and seeing in person were too drastically different cases.
And frankly the latter was far more traumatic.

Hector could carry on whatever conversation he liked with screwed up, sadistic...toys; Lacroix wanted nothing to do with the entire issue and common sense had a way of telling a person that the most logical answer when there was danger was to get away from it.
How Hector was just so perfectly calm dealing with whatever the hell that thing was Lacroix couldn't guess, nor did he want to, his attention was focused more on putting some distance between himself and that intimidating bunch of fluff and fabric ( ... )

Hector would have turned around to try to console Lacroix, but he didn’t really want to take his gaze off of Melvin for now; if he did, he assumed Melvin would try to sneak away again. Instead, he settled for verbal reassurance, and offered up an explanation for the plush animal’s presence in the home. “Lacroix, this creature is named Melvin. He is a spirit-possessed object that belongs to Corbin, and I am temporarily looking after it until Corbin returns for it ( ... )

Corbin.
He should have known something of Corbin's would try to kill him; and Lacroix wasn't at all convinced that the vicious toy wasn't doing that because Corbin had some weird grudge against him for just existing.
Where was Corbin anyway? And why wasn't he the one watching that...thing if it belonged to him ( ... )
