Slash stereotypes

Jan 26, 2009 00:49

I've recently dived back into an old fandom - Star Wars' Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan. Stumbled across an interesting (year old) post here by generale_kenobi, an Obi-Wan/Anakin fan who bravely read Q/O fics and made an analysis of the Q/O fandom. I saw a couple of points I wanted to comment on, but ended up writing more of a mini essay than a comment (-_-;), so I decided to ( Read more... )

Thank you for reading. :) I am certainly not offended by your views, and I hope I didn't come across as offensive or aggressive. I was just inspired when reading your post... and being the middle of the night, I started to ramble!

However, as I said above, I read slash because I want to read about my favourite character, for whom, often time I have a "crush" too, so well, it doesn't fit well with the female in me to see the man I look at as 'my ideal mate' always reduced to the role of the "female" of the slash pair-- especially if the "man" of the pair is a character I don't like.

I'm weird, I usually prefer my "crush" character on the bottom... I don't know what that says about me, LOL! Do I want to subconsciously be that person? Am I a gay man trapped in a woman's body? Maybe I shouldn't analyse it too much... O_o;

As for point 2, I've nothing against hurt/comfort stories and I can even read about a character that has been tortured and/or raped, but I don't like to read all the gori details. I just finished reading a terrific ( ... )

Hi, visiting from quiobisupport and I'd like to say that the physical underpinnings in your third paragraph are greatly appreciated by me. It's our species' sexual dimorphism that starts the ball rolling and the rest of the fics follow along, given that so many authors are het females. You have a breadth of knowledge of other fandoms that I lack; I can only state Star Trek and a little X-Files and a teensy Starsky/Hutch knowledge, ha. It was an interesting take on the entire Q/O reason for being. One final thing: we raised rabbits for many years and the sexual dimorphism in that species is skewed towards the female being perhaps 10-15% larger than the male. How would bunny slash be written, I wonder?

I'm happy to hear that my late-night rambling made some sense. :) Fandom is such an interesting beast. Sometimes I wish I had studied psychology so I could research it properly in depth.

The fandoms I talked about here are not quite representative... I made a list not long ago, and was shocked to find the total number was 68. I've spent way too much time on the internet! (But I wouldn't change it for the world!).

Lololol, I think my brain blew a fuse thinking about this!!
