Can't Save Me (20/24)

Reid knew saying he was horrified was an understatement as he stood in the kitchen at Snyder farm. It was Thanksgiving morning and Katie had dragged him with her and Jacob. The kitchen smelled amazing, but there were so many people in there, he thought it should be a fire hazard or something. He knew everyone that was there because of the non-wedding of Holden and Molly that he had attended for Luke before everything had gone crazy and downhill.

"Are you trying to figure out an escape route?" Faith asked, walking up to him at the counter.

"If I said yes, would you help?" he asked, not looking at her.

"No."

"Figured. You and Katie and the two Hughes idiots are starting to annoy me."

"We're annoying you for Luke's sake."

"I know."

"I knew you would wait for him anyway."

"Then why all the bugging to have lunch or go shopping or with the Hughes idiots to go to the bar, only to have the littlest Hughes pretend to be my boyfriend if another guy even looked at me?"

Faith shrugged, "It's entertaining to see you squirm."

Reid was just about to answer when Holden announced it was time to go and get the Hubbard squash. Reid had no idea what the hell it was but he was pulled along with Holden, Jack, Parker, JJ and Ethan outside. They were going to pull him along a path when his pager went off and he checked it.

"It's the hospital, I have to call them back."

Holden nodded and they all headed down the path. Reid pulled his phone from it's holder and instead of returning to the house with all the woman, he stepped into the barn, which was still cold but a little warmer then standing outside in the yard. He dialed the hospital, only to find out that they accidentally called him.

"Next time, double check the number before paging." he hung up.

"Harsh much." a voice said from behind him.

Reid spun around and a smile broke out on his face. Standing in the doorway, leaning with his arms folded, was Luke. He had on a pair of tight jeans and a black t-shirt under his unzipped jacket. Luke was smiling back at him as well.

"You cut your hair." Reid said

"That's the first thing you're going to say to me after a month apart?" Luke laughed, taking a few steps into the barn.

"What do you want me to say?"

Luke shrugged, "Anything that you want, I guess."

Reid nodded, "How are you?"

"Good. Better then good, actually." Luke replied, "I mean, I still have panic attacks."

"Yeah, I read your letter. I wanted to write back, I just didn't know what to say."

"I wasn't expecting you to write back, I just wanted you to know I was still here."

Reid filled in the gap between them and reached up, cupping Luke's cheek. Luke leaned into his hand, keeping his eyes on him. And then they were kissing. It started out slow but quickly deepened. Reid moved him hand down Luke's arm and wrapped his arms around his waist, pulling him closer. Luke didn't resist or even pull away. He wrapped his own arms around Reid's neck and pressed in closer, if it was even possible. They didn't break apart until they heard talking outside. Both were panting, trying to catch their breath as they listened to the Snyder men chatting as they carried the squash into the house.

"We should probably get back in there." Reid mumbled, not taking his eyes off Luke's.

"Yeah, we should." Luke replied, but didn't move.

And then they were kissing again, not caring that it was Thanksgiving and that they should really be inside with the rest of the family. And then Luke pulled back.

"I have a confession."

"Yeah?"

Luke nodded, "I was the one who had the hospital page you to get you away from everyone. I knew you wouldn't return to the house and you were closer to the barn."

Reid laughed, "You went through all that just to get me alone?"

"Yes, I wanted you to myself for a little bit before dinner."

"Does anyone else know you're here?"

"Faith."

"She knew? She was talking to me before I was dragged outside, why didn't she tell me you were back?"

"I told her not to. I wanted to surprise you."

"Best surprise ever." Reid smiled

"Good, now we really should get back in the house so my family can get over with the surprise that I'm home before dinner starts."

Reid nodded and they finally pulled away from each other. As they were heading out of the barn and back up to the house, Luke took hold of Reid's hand. Reid was caught off guard, but didn't pull his hand away. He just squeezed Luke's hand before they walked into the house. Then the screaming started and Reid had to let go of Luke's hand to allow the younger man to hug his family. A smile broke out on his face to see that Luke wasn't flinching away and had a huge smile on his face himself.
