In this new genetic world, you get bombarded with offers to test you for a multitude of things, from baldness and caffeine metabolising capacity to breast cancer and Huntington's disease. Is it useful? Will you get something out of it?

Maybe.

Twue enuff. But consider the fact that >60% of Malaysians carry genes that predisposes them to develop diabetes and/or hypertension and the number of people who pack restaurants that will block their arteries and increase insulin resistance.

Do you know that the sure-fire way to make money from a franchise is to open a McDonalds?

A labmate of mine is looking into the genetic predisposition to diabetes. It is an alarming figure. Worldwide pattern shows that people from our part of the world are more prone to developing diabetes AND the microvascular complications (ie eye, kidney, ulcerating foot).

It is scary.
