Ask LaBricoleuse: Creating and updating an MSDS file

Since my company actually makes its own MSDS sheets for its products, we keep most of them in PDF format (yes, we still have MSDS books in the labs and on the mfg. floor for them and things used on the floor).

Does anyone keep them electronically?

Yes, some places do! I have been told though (in the industrial health and safety course i took last year) that it's best to have both an electronic copy and a hard copy, in the event that computers are down and the electronic copies are inaccessible. So it would make sense y'all would have all of them in a database, and then hard copies in books down in labs where people are working with the chems in hands-on situations.

The internet has really made MSDS recordkeeping so much easier--i love being able to email a company for an MSDS and getting a PDF right back instantly, rather than the old method of s-mail.

Totally!

I was exporting them for our QA dept. for years.
I showed them how to set them up themselves now.
