Exhibit review (part two): NC Quilt Symposium fiber art show

Jun 29, 2009 21:03

In the first post on this exhibit, i covered the wearable art/accessories and their "Studio Art" category. This post concentrates more on the works shown that took their compositional cues from traditional quilt patterns and sizes.

Lots of great work there. The stitching on Circles I is amazing. The Cash blanket would be about 20 times better if they'd left off the text. (Especially since it's done in that obnoxious inspirational/spiritual poster font/format. It looks so unbalanced. Why is it in a single row on top and squished in the bottom? Ugh. If they'd wanted lyrics, I think they should've embroidered it as a hidden design element - something that just looks abstract from a distance.)

The wedding gown one is really lovely.

I'm becoming more and more interested in quilts and I think I'd like to try my hand at starting one sometime in the next year. So, keep the quilt posts coming. :) I'm mystified as to how anyone plans out the complex layering like in rotary madness.

When i used to work fabric retail for pocket money in undergrad, i had a coworker who planned out quilts on a HUGE corkboard on the wall of her sewing room. I had another coworker who didn't plan them at all, just let them grow organically.

I don't know for sure because i didn't talk to the artist, but i suspect that part of the significance of the title "Rotary Madness," is that she employed some of the speed-cutting techniques that you can do with a rotary cutter and stacked fabrics to crank out various elements of that one.

If you do start making one, i hope you will share pix! :D
