Heh. Some of that sounds quite a bit like damning with faint praise, but you know? As a whole, it actually is very reassuring. :)

Well, yeah, it is damning with faint praise. The thing is, I feel that America is mostly sliding backwards (not in every issue, but on the whole) so that my view of America as represented by the people making decisions today is dark. But in a way, that makes the whole 200+ year project more remarkable: it has survived dark times (from the Civil War to internment camps to McCarthyism to Vietnam), and I am cautiously optimisitc that it will do so again.

Thanks for the link. That was really wonderful:) Thank goodness for people who say things like that. I usually try to be more nuanced/polite in my discourse (probably partly a result of having been a college composition teacher), but sometimes you just need that rhetorical force of a good lambasting. (The Left should do more of it.)
