Well, that'll learn me. Went to a seminar at work today (very interesting by the way, about the effects of insulating and heating houses on energy consumption and health). I was there early to set up so I pulled out my ipod and started reading some fic, a) because I don't have the emotional wherewithal to read fiction without 1) romantic ( Read more... )

That would have been smart, yeah, and saved me from panicking. Next time, I guess. :P

Hindsight is like that. (If you need a belated cover story for this time, you could always come out to him and tell him you were reading queer lit and you panicked when he asked. Which would be true.)

I'm out at work already (or like ... I think so ... it's one of those things where I used to talk about my girlfriend when I had one and sometimes I make jokes that are obviously queer to me, but then I'm never really sure what is gapingly obvious or isn't) so it wouldn't have quite the right Dramatic Tension, but honestly it's not that big a deal, he wasn't offended or anything, I was just BRIGHT RED. And hoping he didn't read anything over my shoulder because knotting may have been involved (goddd, why oh why).

A magic survival skill is to learn to say with a straight face (and then a little, genuine smile) "something explicit". Or my favourite, when people are snooping over my shoulder to my folder/documents windows, "let me just close my porn folder".

I know I work with academics who, while nerds, are pretty liberal, but it makes other people stop their noseying every single time :)

Oh, I must get up the nerve to say that - "nerds, but pretty liberal" is not a bad assessment of most of my coworkers. That's great.

My go-to line when reading fic and being asked about it is, "it's a short story a friend of mine wrote". Usually stops any further chat about it as well. :D
