Whose idea was it to brine olives? Why were people so determined to tinker with something so utterly inedible fresh from the tree? The world will never know....
As for this particular foodie affectation, I never developed a taste for coffee, and am not about to start now (it's hard enough to fall asleep as it is), so I'm not in a position to say. It would be interesting to know whether anyone has done a blind taste-test comparing kopi luak with coffee from common-or-garden beans, to avoid both grade-inflation ("If it's expensive it must be good") and squickitude ("It came from WHAT?!?").
