I think he's one of those voices you either like or don't. To me, he has a raw quality which, while not pretty, is powerful. (I suppose he is like a taste for single malt scotch in this regard. Some aficionados (like myself) love it. Most folks wonder why anyone would cultivate a taste for something that tastes like medicine, burns on the way down, and costs far too much a bottle.)
I suppose I could never really stomach scotch or whiskey. According to my parents, when I had my first attack of grippe at around 11 months, my mother panicked. The nice old lady next door, Mrs. Schmidt, advised a thimble full of scotch or whiskey. I don't know what they had on hand, probably whiskey since my dad is allergic to scotch, but I was breathing freely again. Out like a light, but breathing freely.
