Went to see Ionesco's Exit the King, starring Geoffrey Rush, at the Malthouse - an absurdist play recently retranslated by Rush & Neil Armfield, the director. Speaking as someone whose relatives had houses on Phillip Island, when I was a kid, no boardwalks etc.

As far as I recall, given the greatly increased numbers of people going to see them (busloads of tourists etc), some killings, etc., those are to control the Stupid Humans, not the penguins.

I haven't actually seen the Penguin Parade myself, but I'd be worried about the spotlights too. When I went on the "see penguins in Melbourne harbour" boat tour, they did have spotlights shining from the boat, but not glaring ones.

Interestingly, the most expensive & exclusive penguin viewing option, the Ultimate Penguin Tour, uses night vision scopes and no lighting... it's supposedly to allow you to get closer to them, but you can get pretty close to them with big bright lights dazzling the poor things.

Glad you like the icon - pure exhilaration, isn't it?
