I think your first point and your last point are important. To enact a law that has as its sole purpose to exclude people is just wrong. Amendments to our constitution are usually made to guarantee equal rights to everyone.
I my opinion one of the biggest concerns we face in this country is the influence of religious fundamentalists on our democracy. It's easy to look at other parts of the world in which Islamic or Jewish fundamentalists control governments and think to ourselves, "wow they're nuts or pretty extreme". If we are not careful, the same think could happen in this country. Take a look at what plunged Europe into the "dark ages".
