And the Lord said, "Hey, why don't I throw rocks at someone? It'll be fun!"

So . . . the attempts at system restore were unsuccessful. Dad, to his credit, spent a significant amount of time trying to undo the damage. His theory is a virus got in and corrupted the file(s) in question, and one of his antivirus programs deleted it/them. At present, his advice is to talk to my brother and ask him to fuss with the Windows ( Read more... )

Did I reply to this yet? I think I tried, and the internet stopped working. Not sure.

The program is the Microsoft Works Word Processor, and it's generally available for around $100, which is annoyingly price-gougey, as with the rest of the suite included it's $150 and this as part of a computer that cost me $500 or so . . . something's fishy there.

The sympathy has already made me feel better. Otherwise . . . fic? Fic always makes me feel better. ;)

Babes, this is just horrid. I'm sorry you're having to deal with it - especially seeing as how it was kinda sorta thrust on you. I've learned - the hard way - to not let anyone touch my shit. *hugs* Did your files work out when you emailed them?

I have no idea. They're sitting in cyberspace right now, safe and sound on two different email accounts, and I'm following them up with approximately everything else I've accomplished over the past three years; I'm going to try to just reinstall Works but the CD that it's on is the system restore CD, and I don't know whether it'll do just that; otherwise I'll just wipe the whole system clean and restore to original parameters, hence the email backups.

I haven't been able to tell if they work out yet, as I still lack a program to open them.

This will teach me to print stuff out every so often next time. I have fiction that's un-backed-up anywhere else and I DON'T want to lose it. *hopeful*
