His theory is a virus got in and corrupted the file(s) in question, and one of his antivirus programs deleted it/them. The program is the Microsoft Works Word Processor, and it's generally available for around $100, which is annoyingly price-gougey, as with the rest of the suite included it's $150 and this as part of a computer that cost me $500 or so . . . something's fishy there.
The sympathy has already made me feel better. Otherwise . . . fic? Fic always makes me feel better. ;)

I haven't been able to tell if they work out yet, as I still lack a program to open them.
This will teach me to print stuff out every so often next time. I have fiction that's un-backed-up anywhere else and I DON'T want to lose it. *hopeful*
